From the recording Beside Myself

“A Friend I Used To Know” brings to mind the songwriting styles of John Prine and Leonard Cohen. It is Drew's retrospective tribute to all the friends who have gone before, in particular his brother Mark who passed away unexpectedly at age 44. Bruce Kaphan's piano and Joe Kyle's arco standup bass lines are highlighted in this very emotional ballad.

Lyrics

A Friend I Used to Know
Drew James©2018

Smiling faces in the photographs
Carved initials on the wall
Funny stories that still make me laugh
That's all that's left, that's all

Sometimes it seems
It was all just a dream
The time we spent long ago
Me and a friend I used to know

The future we thought we would share
Never came to pass
It was cut short on the road somewhere
Guess it wasn't made to last

Chorus

We'll never see another
Of those days we knew back then
But this I'll tell you brother
I'd love to do it all again

Chorus

Smiling faces in the photographs
Carved initials on the wall
Funny stories that still make me laugh
That's all that's left, that's all
