    Catcher in the Rye

    The Catcher In The Rye

    Drew James © 2013

    Father, Oh father

    The soldiers lie in wait

    Sharpened hooks

    Are buried in their bait

    You kept trying

To drop them one by one

    But reinforcements

    Have you on the run

    One for the road

Make it two for the pain

    Three for the memories

    And four for the blame

    There's no way

    You can say goodbye

Goodbye to the Catcher in the Rye

    Father, Oh father

    You say war is hell

    That winners are losers

    With stories they can't tell

    There's a badge of

    Courage in your head

    Every night it

    Bleeds a deeper red

    One for the road

Make it two for the pain

    Three for the memories

    And four for the blame

    There's no way

    You can say goodbye

Goodbye to the Catcher in the Rye

    Father, Oh father

    Drink that whiskey in

    It will never

    Wash away your sins

    You say you need it

    To face the enemy

And when you look in the mirror

    That is who you see

    One for the road

Make it two for the pain

    Three for the memories

    And four for the blame

    There's no way

    You can say goodbye

Goodbye to the Catcher in the Rye

Goodbye to the Catcher in the Rye

    Familiar Eyes

    Familiar Eyes

    Drew James ©2014

Walking along, minding the business before me

When I looked up and saw, familiar eyes coming toward me

She said, “Have you been good?”, then smiled that smile I still dream of

In silence I stood, for I never got over her lost love

I just couldn't bring myself to say

The words in my heart that day

What good's a song, if it's never sung

What good's a bell, if it's never rung

What good's a flower, if it never grows

What good's a love, that she doesn't know

I just couldn't bring myself to say

The words in my heart that day

Not talking at all, awkwardly sharing that moment

When I looked down and saw, her diamond wedding ring glowing

It's been a year, I went that whole time without knowing

Holding back tears, I said, “I have to be going.”

    (Pre- and Chorus)

    (Repeat Chorus and 2X pre-chorus)

    Saturday Smile

    Saturday Smile

    Drew James © 2007

The moon lights the highway tonight

    It showed up about Tennessee

A small slice of day that got left behind

    To keep me company

    A white lines midnight parade

    Passes through my headlight beam

One by one I’ll count them away

    Until I get to see

Her Saturday Smile, her Saturday smile

The glow of her Saturday Smile

Her Saturday Smile, her Saturday smile

The glow of her Saturday Smile

    Musical Bridge

The dawn spills an orange juice sky

    Across the sugar brown hills

Morning explodes in a breakfast of light

But there’s one thing that’s brighter still

    (Chorus)

    The sky will turn blue

When I walk, walk in her room

Just one look on her face

Will be worth my all night chase

    (Chorus)

Her Saturday Smile, her Saturday smile

When she turns on that Saturday Smile

Her Saturday Smile, her Saturday smile

I’ll be home to her Saturday Smile

    Castle Walls (Love's Not Fair)

    Castle Walls (Love's Not Fair)

    Drew James© 2013

    Here within these castle walls

    Love tells all its secrets

Every need that comes to call

I seek a way to please it, I seek a way to please it

    I offered her a chair

    She answers with a stare

I ask, “Why don’t you care?”

Then she whispered, “Love’s not fair”

Lovs not fair, love's not fair

    Here within these castle walls

    Life unveils its freedom

    There inside the entry hall

    Stands its naked meaning

    Stands it's naked meaning

    Her deafness to my pleas

    Drove me to my knees

She gave me back my keys

Then she turned her back to leave, turned her back to leave

    Love's not fair

    I used to swing

The whole world on a string

    Now that string's a chain

That binds me like a slave

    Love's not fair

    Here within these castle walls

    Night screams out in silence

Though I hear no sound at all

It splits my ears with violence, splits my ears with violence

    I search but cannot find

    Some clue she’s left behind

    Some clear or subtle sign

To reassure me in my mind

That love is fair, love is fair

    I used to swing

The whole world on a string

    Now that string's a chain

That binds me like a slave

    Love's not fair

    Here within these castle walls

    Love tells all its secrets

Every need that comes to call

I seek a way to please it, I seek a way to please it

    Holding On

    Holding On

    Drew James © 2011

    Frozen fast

    In a photograph

    Two pairs of eyes

    Captured in this picture

    Stare across the years

    So long ago

    Their eyes aglow

    Huddled close

    For this faded portrait

    Before their fate was near

    Holding on

    What time

    Let slip away

    She looks so young

    His tie's undone

    Maybe it

    Was taken on the boardwalk

    Down by the old arcade

    Hand in hand

    When love began

    Endlessy

    Stretching like the ocean

    Behind them on that day

    Chorus

    I can't resist

    Her tender lips

    In her arms

    I found my redemption

    In her warm embrace

    Hand in hand

    Out on the sand

As the sun sinks down toward the ocean

    To steal away the day

    Chorus

    As the sun sets

Someone snaps our picture on the Boardwalk

    Down by the old arcade

    Chorus

    Miwok Walk

    The Miwok Walk

    Drew James © 2014

She's the one who does her best

    To ease my worried mind

She always leaves me out of breath

    She does it every time

We took a walk on the Miwok, the Miwok walk

We took a walk on the Miwok walk

We took a walk on the Miwok, the Miwok walk

We took a walk on the Miwok walk

She lifts my spirits high above

    She never lets me down

She does it all with tender love

    She's not just foolin' round

    (Chorus)

She took me on her rocket ship

She shot me to the stars

But t was just a magic trick

    I never laughed so hard

    (Chorus)

    She has everything I want

She shares it all with me

She hates it cold, she loves it hot

    She's pleasant company

    (Chorus) X 2

    Any Avenue

    Any Avenue

    Drew James © 2012

    It's another starless night

    Underneath the city lights

    Down along any avenue

Searching for a love that's true

    I'm no different than

    Any other natural man

    I'll do anything for you

    Down along any avenue

    Friday night's an escapade

Gather round where the music's played

    Down along any avenue

Every song that you ever knew

    (Chorus)

    Daydreaming on a rainy day

Sun comes out and I feel the same

    Down along any avenue

Skies are grey and skies are blue

    (Chorus)

    Traffic light above my head

First it's green then it's red

    Down along any avenue

Won't you give me a signal too

    (Chorus)

    Mystery she hides her face

At the end of my chase

    Down along any avenue

Tomorrow is a new day too

    (Chorus)

    Down along any avenue (X3)

    Thoughts of New Orleans

    Thoughts of New Orleans

    Drew James © 2008

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

    Where the mighty river flows

Where the seeds of dreams are sown

    Where hearts sprout wings

On the southern wind that blows

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

The place that I call home

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

Where the sun shines good and strong

Where the heat lasts all night long

    Where time runs slow

And the air is rich with song

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

    The where I belong

That City of passion, style and taste

That City of sinners and of saints

That City that spawns memories that time can’t erase

    New Orleans

It is like no other place

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

Where the rain comes pouring down

As I walk its hallowed ground

    And when I do

I can hold my head up proud

I’m flooded with thoughts of New Orleans

God I wish I was there now

That City of passion, style and taste

That City of sinners and of saints

That City that spawns memories that time can’t erase

    New Orleans

It is like no other place

    Something French

    Something French

    Drew James © 2008

    Up above the party lights

    Higher than a kite

    I'm like a shooting star

    I’m one with the night

    I hear a melody

Moi pour elle dans la vie

    Playing over in my mind

    It's calling out to me

    It's calling out to me

One more drink would just go to my head

There’s something else that I crave instead

This thirst, no drink can quench

I’m in the mood, the mood for something French

The neon casts its silver glow

    Where little secrets grow

Into tyrants that can rule your mind

    And steal away your soul

    Then a dark breathtaking sight

    Turns shadow into light

Like a siren from a film noir

The scene turns black and white

The scene turns black and white

    (Chorus)

There's a look in her eyes

    I recognize

She’s in the mood, the mood for something French

She's in the mood, the mood for something French

    I'll Be On My Way

    I've had it baby

    That's it for me

I try and try but all I get is misery

    You say you need me

    Then you leave me again

    You say believe me

Then you deceive me in the end

There's only one thing left to do

There's only one thing left to stay

    Before this day is through

    I'll be on my way

    All love's sweet traces

    Have worn paper thin

    Now I speak softly

And I wear a thick skin

    (Prechorus)

    (Chorus)

    I'll be on my way

    Do It With You

    Do It With You

    Drew James © 2009

When I hear Sinatra sing the Summer Wind

Before he's done I want to hear it again

He pulls me in with his every note

Till it melts away like the virgin snow

If you ever find yourself some time sometime

Just watching the clouds passing by

So long as you have nothing to do

Maybe I can do it with you

Maybe I can do it with you

Maybe I can do it with you

When you are down on your luck

Maybe that's the time you should live it up

You never know which way the wind will blow

Every moment is just touch and go

    (Chorus)

    (Musical Bridge)

Maybe I can do it with you

Maybe I can do it with you

Maybe I can do it with you

Like the stars that fill the evening sky

I can picture you in my frame of mind

Now that my heart's an open book

Maybe it is worth a second look

    (Chorus)

    When you promise yourself

    You'll find love

If it's the last thing that you do

Baby I can do it with you

Baby I can do it with you

Baby I can do it with you

Baby I can do it with you

    Your Love Song

    Your Love Song

    Drew James © 2014

If I were to write you a love song

I’d use all your favorite words

And rhyme them in ways so clever and strange

    Each line in perfect verse

If I were to write you a love song

    I'd retune my guitar

The notes that I'd play would spell out your name

In a melody that reaches for the stars

And I’d mention all your favorite cities

    Like Boston and New Orleans

And maybe that song could take you

    Someplace you have never been

If I were to write you a love song

Some lines would make you smile

    Others would be quite sentimental

But I promise to not make you cry

And I’d mention all your favorite cities

    Like Boston and New Orleans

And maybe that song could take you

    Someplace you have never been

And I'd sing my song to you

    Every day

Just to say I love you

I love you in all your favorite cities

I love you in Boston and New Orleans

Truth is, baby I love you

    Every place I've ever been

If I were to write you a love song

    The Tin Soldier

    The Tin Soldier

    Drew James© 2008

The blue ribbon fell from the box

That was wrapped at the toymaker’s shop

    At silent attention within

Were toy soldiers made of tin

The tin that the toymaker bought

Came up just a little bit short

So one soldier in the platoon

Had one leg instead of two

A tin tear fell from the soldier’s eye

    When he realized

He could never march in the parade

When the other soldiers left him behind

Something caught the tin soldier’s eye

There by a little glass lake

A ballerina danced on one leg

The tine solider he never knew

That her other leg was just out of view

She raised it so high off the floor

It was hidden by the skirt she wore

Tin tears of pain turned to tin tears of joy

    When that soldier toy

Fell in love with the dancing doll

And he dreamed in his mind

Of a day they might be man and wife

For if in his arms she could be

Their two legs would make them complete

A little boy reached into the box

For the one legged soldier he got

Then he climbed high atop of his bed

And placed the soldier on a tall window ledge

A brisk wind rose up from the south

And blew the tin soldier out

He fell through the cold winter breeze

And landed head first in the street

Tin tears of joy turned to tin tears of pain

    As it began to rain

He thought of his dancing doll

As the soldier lay there drenched by the storm

    Two boys happened along

One looked down on the ground

And said, ”Hey, look what I found!”

    They fashioned a newspaper boat

To see if the soldier would float

But the gutter was a-rage with the rain

And washed the little boat down the drain

Tin tears of pain turned to tin tears of joy

    As that soldier toy

Said,”I’m off to see the world!”

And he dreamed in his mind

As he rode down through the pipes

“A pirate of the sewer I will be

With a matchstick strung to my knee”

The pipe led to the ocean so deep

Where the little boat began to sink

When the soldier hit the bottom below

A big fish swallowed him whole

The big fish swam far out to sea

As the soldier cried,”Oh, woe is me

For I can never see the world and its sights

In this fish belly dark as the night”

Tin tears of joy turned to tin tears of pain

For his love was in vain

With his ballerina so far away

The fisherman yelled, “That one is mine!”

As he pulled the big fish in on his line

Then he sold it to a man in the town

Who took it home to batter and brown

The man gave the fish to his wife

Who opened it up with a knife

When light reached the tin soldiers glance

He saw the room where his adventure had began

Tin tears of pain turned to tin tears of joy

    When that soldier toy

Saw his ballerina dancing by the lake

And he dreamed in his mind

Of a day they might be man and wife

For if in his arms she could be

Their two legs would make them complete

The little boy who'd opened the box

Pulled the soldier from the fish’s gut

Then he cried “He’s all smelly and stained”

And threw the soldier out the window again

A sequin tear fell from the ballerina’s eye

    When she realized

She may never see her soldier again

She still dreams in her mind

Of a day they might be man and wife

For if in her arms he could be

Their two hearts would make them complete

    Betting On a Better Day

    Betting on a Better Day

    Drew James© 2007

    The day begins at midnight

    Night falls at the dawn

And in between they fight it out

Until the writings on the wall

The full moon’s at its brightest

    Just before it wanes

But we all know when the lights go out

It will all come around again

Betting on a better day (X2)

The earth turns like a pinwheel

    Round and round the sun

And the sun does twirls around something else

And it just goes on and on

And it works in both directions

If you look in rather than out

What you’ll find is tiny atoms

    Every one spinning about

Betting on a better day (X2)

You know it makes me wonder

    About this thing called time

Maybe it’s not just a one way street

Nature don’t seem to draw straight lines

And if time were a circle

It would mean it would have no end

Just when we think it’s over

It’s just a turn around instead

And we’ll be headed back to then

Betting on a better day (X4)

    Bedtime Rhymes

    Here’s one for the money

    And two for the show

    Give me one last kiss

    Before I go

    A penny for your thoughts

A dime for your a dance

    The moon is as bright

    As a new second chance

And each little star shines above

With the sparkling hope of your love

    Of your love

    Make my day

    Make my night

    Lead the way

    With your light

    And your song

    Full of sad

    And sweet

    Bedtime rhymes

    Here’s two for your company

    And three for your crowd

    I'm at your door

With my head in the clouds

You fill my ears with promise

You fill my heart with hope

    You promise my heart

    Will never be broke

Can I take that promise with me

    When I leave

    When I leave

    Screamin’ At The Sky

    © Drew James 2001

Hey little waterbug swimmin’ all alone

Crawlin’ on the surface of a dirty yellow pond

Didn’t see it lurkin’ in the water down below

Till it grabbed him by his skinny leg and wouldn’t let ‘im go

    Whoa, no place to hide

    Whoa, goin’ for a ride

    Whoa, he said goodbye

    Whoa, screamin’ at the sky

Poor boy lived up on imaginary hill

Poundin’ and a-chasin’ everything that gave a thrill

Middle age came and it caught him unawares

Kicked him in the teeth and it threw him down the stairs

    Whoa, no place to hide

    Whoa, goin’ for a ride

    Whoa, he said goodbye

    Whoa, screamin’ at the sky

Papa woke up with the devil on his mind

Now he’s fast asleep with an angel in his eye

Goodbye papa with the slammin’ of the door

Mama used to hate him now she loves him evermore

    Whoa, no place to hide

    Whoa, goin’ for a ride

    Whoa, he said goodbye

    Whoa, screamin’ at the sky

    Whoa, no place to hide

    Whoa, goin’ for a ride

    The slamming of the door

    Coming Home

    Sunrise on the highrise

    New light on mother land

My key is in my pocket

    Right here underneath my hand

    I'm coming home

    I'm coming home

    Standing on the corner

In a clash of city streets

But I am miles above it

For the world is at my feet

    (R) I'm coming home

    I'm coming home

    I'm coming home

    I'm coming home

    (C) Once behind my doorway

    Lived loneliness and chores

Now that you are there for me

All I'm living for is coming home

    Coming home

    And I'm coming home

    I'm coming home

    I'll step into the hallway

Hang my coat up on the hook

I'll find you in the kitchen

Someone who I'm sure was smart

Said home is where you find your heart

Even though that may be true

    Home has other meanings too

For where we live is just a house

We live within, but we can live without

For me home's anywhere I find

    Your heart next to mine

    Springtime In Your Eyes

    Drew James © 2010

Lay down your head on my soft feather bed

And speak some gentle words to me

The past has gone away there's no road to yesterday

Tomorrow's an empty canvas for our dreams

When the snow line drops below the hill

When the cold wind blows across the sky

When the ice flows from the windowsill

It will still be springtime in your eyes

Like a bird in the tree you sang your song to me

And I knew that we would never part

It didn't take long before you became that song

And you built your nest deep within my heart

    (Chorus)

    Instrumental

    (Chorus)

I feel it begin just beneath my skin

When your tender charms come out to play

I've been waiting all the while on your crooked smile

Just waiting to love another day

    (Chorus)

Until the parade has marched away

I will live to love another day

As sure as the morning sun can rise

It will always be springtime in your eyes

    Gin Proof Canoe

    Gin-Proof Canoe

    Drew James © 2010

The dance floor is all wet and slippery

My ice cubes are melting on the bar

The bartender has a loose elbow

An old injury from the war

I see no end to my problems

The smoke is too thick to see through

There's only one thing that can save me

    What I need is a gin-proof canoe

    A gin-proof canoe

I'll sail it straight back to you

    Far away from this barstool

High and dry in my gin-proof canoe

    My gin-proof canoe

The rain is pounding on the rooftop

I hear the cold howl of the wind

Lock all the doors and the windows

It sounds like they're trying to come in

I've drawn it right here on this napkin

I've worked on it all afternoon

I'll finish it up by this evening

It's the plans for my gin-proof canoe

    (Chorus)

The nights in this place are so beautiful

The neon paints all the walls

The bottles all shimmer with color

I can't see out that window at all

I feel so safe and so comfortable

I've chased away all of my blues

The bartender wiped up my ice cubes

With the plans for my gin-proof canoe

    My gin-proof canoe

Some day I will see those plans through

And I'll sail it straight back to you

High and dry in my gin-proof canoe

    My gin-proof canoe

    Whispering in the Moonlight

    Whispering in the Moonlight

    Drew James © 2011

    Eyes of a thief

    Heart of a stranger

Poison poured into a wise guy's wine

After the deal he collapsed at the wheel

Winner take all and a car to steal

    Bagged and gagged

    Trembling in silence

Royal flush still in his hand

A carnival punk and a waterfront drunk

Stole the gambler's car and locked him in the trunk

They were whispering in the moonlight

    In their sad romantic dance

He came along with a sawed off shotgun

And she just came along for the laughs

    Shadowed fields

    Split by the highway

Headlights burning through the cold dark night

Lowjack trace turned a license plate

Radar gun and a high speed chase

    (Chorus)

    Blood on the keys

    Hollow tomorrows

    Flowers of innocence burning bright

Together they died like Bonnie and Clyde

And the coroner ruled it as a suicide

    California

I hear you calling to me

    A haunting, distant melody

    Looking up into the sky

Which star points the way tonight

To the land of my dreams

    California (X4)

    I’m knocking on your door

My future’s written on your shore

You’re the bet that I will make

You’re the chance that I will take

You’re the hope I’ve been waiting for

    California (X4)

Someone said the world is small

Who it was I can’t recall

Though we’re half a world apart

You’re right here in my heart

Your name is written on my wall

    I’ll let you borrow

    All my tomorrows

A debt you won’t have to repay

For I can think of no better way

    To spend all my days

Though we’re half a world apart

You’re right here in my heart

Your name is written on my wall

    Bottom of Your Heart

    Bottom of Your Heart

    Drew James © 2011

This windy trail led to the highway

Where the rusty hills bake in the sun

The time was all wrong and the wait was too long

At this crossroads of your way and my way

It may be too late for a new start

Once you've finished your last goodnight kiss

But just in case won't you save me a place

Somewhere at the bottom of your heart

I've always been a long way from perfect

And sometimes I'm a long way from home

And I never knew the meaning of true loving

    Until you came along

There's a freshly cut rose from the garden

Off to join a new found bouquet

The stem left behind is all withered and dried

Its few leaves broken and hardened

In winter that stem has a new sprout

That in springtime blooms into a rose

Maybe love can grow from the hope that I've sown

Somewhere at the bottom of your heart

    (Chorus)

    (repeat second verse)

Maybe love can grow from the hope that I've sown

Somewhere at the bottom of your heart

    Lady Luck

    Lady Luck

    Drew James © 2009

She knows the best of me

She knows the worst of me

She knows the ins and outs of all my fragile fantasies

She'd break the bank for me

She'd walk the plank for me

    Cross your fingers Lady Luck

She spends her nights on me

She shines a light on me

She does everything to keep from losing sight of me

She takes the bait for me

She ups the stakes for me

    Cross your fingers Lady Luck

We'll lay it all down on the line

Spin that big wheel and let it ride

    Together we can win

I won't know where I end and she begins

I pull my strings for her

    I whisper things to her

I'd put on boxing gloves and I'd climb into the ring for her

I'd sell my soul for her

Then spend it all on her

    Cross your fingers Lady Luck

    (Chorus)

I've built a world for her

It spins and twirls for her

I'd sail the seven seas and every flag I would unfurl for her

I'll bet my life on her

Then pass the dice to her

    Cross your fingers Lady Luck

And I feel like my number's coming up

Cross your fingers Lady Luck (X2)

    Troubles for a Cowboy Hat

    Troubles For A Cowboy Hat

    Drew James © 2010

I'm going back to Texas where I came from

I'm gonna leave this New York City far behind

This big town left me flat

Now I ain't never coming back

I'm gonna trade my troubles for a cowboy hat

I had a dream that once did not seem crazy

A boyhood dream that I just had to chase

I wasn't so much out for fame and fortune

It was more like trying to win the human race

But sometimes dreams don't end the way you wanted

Sometimes things just don't go as planned

Happiness is only where you find it

And I guess sometimes it takes a moving van

    (Chorus)

I landed here with hope and expectations

I felt I had the whole world at my feet

But when they turned the bright lights out on Broadway

I could see that it was just another street

There's so many people in Manhattan

Seven million call this island home

But somehow out there on those crowded sidewalks

I get lonelier than I've ever known

    (Chorus)

Maybe I wasn't meant to be successful

Maybe I'm just naïve and confused

But I could never call myself a winner

When it meant someone else had to lose

So if you're ever out in New York City

As you walk beneath that beautiful skyline

Maybe you can keep an eye out for me

There's a dream I lost there maybe you can find

    (Chorus)

This big town left me flat

Now I ain't never coming back

I'm gonna trade my troubles for a cowboy hat

I'm gonna trade my troubles for a cowboy hat

    Cradle and All

    Cradle and All

    Drew James © 2009

    Rock-a-bye baby

    On the treetop

    When the wind blows

    The cradle will rock

    When the bow breaks

    The cradle will fall

    And down will come baby

    Cradle and all

    When the bow breaks

    The baby will fall

    And I'll hear her crying

    From right down the hall

    Hush little baby

    Don't you weep

    Daddy's right here

And I'll sing you to sleep

    (Chorus)

    When the bow breaks

    The baby will fall

    So I lie awake

    Afraid she might call

    Tossing and turning

    Right through the dawn

    Thinking the worst

    If the call doesn't come

    (Chorus)

NOTES
Screaming At the Sky is a one man show with Drew on guitars, harmonica and keyboards, recorded in his own studio. As with his earlier albums, many of the songs on Screaming At the Sky deal with life's unfairness, and also with those epiphanies that somehow reveal to us what's really important. We're going to hear three of the twelve songs on Screaming At the Sky, and we'll start off with one of those songs …

    It’s

    Time to go

I can smell the tar on the road

    From my head

    To my shoes

I can tell there’s no time to lose

Looking out over the golden hills

Driving with the cool west wind

    Once we reach our destination

    Gonna start all over again

Cause I live for these days

    Drenched in your powerful sunshine

    Hot on the chase

Of whatever lies in front of our headlights

    Life is on the run

    Better Off Than Before

    Better Off Than Before

    Drew James© 2008

She liked to be the girl everybody adored

He’d just as soon be left alone and completely ignored

But she turned out to be the one he tried for

He turned out to be the one she cried for

It seems that love was just blame in its earliest stage

Now he seeks out the crowded places

While she’s drawn to the quiet places

And they both claim they’re better off than before

She tried to play hard to get when he asked her her name

He didn’t know she was only playing a game

He started to leave with his head hung down low

She reached out and grabbed him by his elbow

A story they would tell to their friends again and again

While she would tell it romantic and glowing

He would joke I should have kept on going

And that’s what he did when it finally came to an end

She took a job at the mall when her tears were all dry

He happened to shop there one day and he was totally surprised

They traded those years of sweet romance

For, between them, one awkward glance

He looked for the candle in her eye but there was no flame

As he turned around to go

He waited for that gentle touch on his elbow

But this time she just let go on his way

Now they both claim they’re better off than before

    Carried Away

    Carried Away

    Drew James © 2008

I read all your intentions oh so wrong

I’ll try to be more careful from now on

I never thought the urge could get this strong

    But it’s been so long

    It’s been so long

My hopes clung from a tall daredevil height

Awaiting the chance to take to flight

I waited ‘til the moment seemed just right

    I wished I may

    I wished I might

    I was carried away

Like a bird from the seashore

Like a child on the dance floor

I was carried away, carried away

    Carried away, carried away

We looked out on a sky of midnight blue

    Awaiting the yellow harvest moon

I breathed in the scent of your perfume

    So close to you

    My fever grew

    I was carried away

Like a bird from the seashore

Like a child on the dance floor

I was carried away, carried away

    Carried away, carried away

    I was carried away

    I was carried away

    Childhood Christmas

    A Childhood Christmas

    Drew James © 2008

My only church is the universe

That blows my sweet time away

Where an ancient bearded man with a sickle and an hourglass

Pays me a visit each day

He spoke only once that I remember

It came as a total surprise

He tapped me twice on the shoulder

And said, ”Brother, can you spare the time?”

Open the curtains, stoke up the fire

Look out on the chapel dark sea

Wipe the grins from your mud covered rain boots

As the moon conjures up tonight’s dreams

Brush away the cobwebs, turn up the lamp

    Splash gaslight into the trees

And I’ll paint you a picture of a childhood Christmas

I can make it any color you please

The silent stars in the heavens

Prepare them selves to be gazed

While the ocean writes a song inside of a seashell

A steam organ waltz gently plays

    The evening becomes sentimental

When the whales start telling their tales

The town crier’s tears fall around me

    Filling 22 buckets and pails

    (Chorus)

    Love sends out its invitations

They must be opened behind closed doors

Dressed in the language of hope and creation

They always leave you wanting for more

The dream wheel spins for good fortune

Where the carnival kewpie doll smiles

Skeptics and hopers both become gamblers

    Glassy eyed, nervous and wild

    (Chorus X2)

    Nothing Personal

    Nothing Personal

    Drew James © 2004

I sat down beside her at Rancho Rob’s café

The stools were close together, yet she seemed so far away

I ordered some coffee and she said I’ll take more

Then she looked in my direction as the waitress stood and poured

So I asked her, ”Have you been in here before?”

Then she said, “It’s nothing personal my friend,

But my last romance just came to bitter end

And I just can’t go through that all again

Until my heart’s had time to mend

    It’s nothing personal my friend”

I said, “I am sorry, I was trying to break the ice”

Then she broke into a smile and said, “That’s OK you seem nice”

Then we spent the evening talking and she said, “Please walk me home.”

When we got to her apartment she said, “Don’t leave me alone.”

Then she closed her eyes and kissed me soft and slow

Then whispered these words soft and low

She said, “It’s nothing personal my friend,

But my last romance came to such a bitter end

That I want you to stay here if you can

And help my heart to mend

    It’s nothing personal my friend”

Each day with her was better than the day before

She opened up a world to me that I had not explored

Then one day, as I knocked upon her door

I noticed a note laying on the floor

And it said, “It’s nothing personal my friend,

But my last romance just called me up again

Now I’ve left to be there next to him

    I hope you understand

    It’s nothing personal my friend”

Months had passed when I went back to Rancho Rob’s Café

And there she was sitting in exactly the same place

She noticed me the moment that I walked in the door

Then she walked across the room and said, “I have missed you so.”

But before she could say one word more

I said, “It’s nothing personal my friend,

But our last romance just came to such a bitter end

That I just can’t go through that all again

    I hope you understand

    It’s nothing personal my friend”

    Flowers of Chance

    Flowers of Chance

    Drew James © 2008

I’ve been rained out when it didn’t even rain

I’ve been railroaded without stepping on a train

I’ve been burned bad where there wasn’t any flames

I’ve been tied down where there wasn’t any rope

I’ve been cleaned out where there wasn’t any soap

But I’m still hopeful though I'm running out of hope

I’m taking shelter down an oak shadowed road

And leave my poisons to dry up in the sun

Today is the day I will lighten my load

An empty promise can still weigh a ton

I wrestled the devil for a flower of chance

I’m tired of trying to please somebody someplace else

    (Musical Interlude)

I’ve been shot down where there wasn’t any guns

Came in last place before a race was run

But I’m still singing this song no others have sung

    (Chorus)

The flowers of chance are not just black and white

    But every color in between

I finally found one and I know that it's right

Cause it matches the color of my dreams

I wrestled the devil for a flower of chance

    One that’s right for me

    Not somebody someplace else

    One that’s right for me

    Not somebody someplace else

    Bad For Business

    Bad for Business

    Drew James © 2006

I grew up a poor boy

Got a job by the time I was twelve

Worked in an ice cream shop when I was in my teens

That was back in the 60’s

So I grew my hair like the hippies

Until the boss man pulled me aside and said these words to me

He said it’s bad for business

And I don't go in for that kind of thing

    Bad for business

I just want to hear that register ring

    His words made me wonder

Why the American flag ain’t green

I guess good for business is just bad for me

    When I graduated

Got a job from nine to five

Which grew to seven to seven then five to nine

My weekends got squeezed so tight

They all fell on Sunday night

So I asked the boss, “Please hire more help I’m dyin’! “

    (Chorus)

So I took off my suit and tie

And picked up my electric guitar

And taught myself to play some rock ‘n roll tunes

I tried to get a gig at a bar

I told ‘em I could be a star

But the owner said, “With no draw you won’t be playing here soon.”

    (Chorus)

Now my cashflow is in retreat

And food’s all I know how to eat

And it's bad for business that's bad for me

I guess it’s just business that's bad for me

    Well good people

If it’s business, I guess it can’t be fun

And if it’s fun, I guess it can’t be a business

So much for the pursuit of happiness

They just keep giving me the business

    Invisible World

    Invisible World

    Drew James © 2007

Life goes on in my invisible world

Inside its shell lies a beautiful pearl

Like a needle in a haystack way down deep

Where it lies is a secret to me

Don’t need a shovel to bury my pride

Where can I find you when there’s no place left to hide?

The invisible world is at my feet

So I look down when I’m on the street

In the company of strangers I’m a lost soul

You can still be lost when you know your way home

Don’t want to die until you know I’m alive

Where can I find you when there’s no place left to hide?

When my poor heart’s about to burst

My last laugh won’t best the first

Come the day I can’t keep it inside

Where can I find you when there’s no place left to hide?

The invisible world is in your hands

You hold the key to the promised land

Just a little bit of heaven lies under your thumb

Like some queen of kingdom come

Living on the edge of a great divide

Where can I find you when there’s no place left to hide?

    (Chorus)

Where can I find you when there’s no place left to hide?

    Pain And Paradise

    Pain and Paradise

    Drew James© 2007

If I were to ask you

    Would you answer truly?

    Would you smile softly?

    Would you whisper to me?

Or would you stare at me in silence

And shake your head in disbelief

Would I regret it for a lifetime?

Would you turn around and leave

Are you the dream that will come true?

Or must I learn to forget you?

Without an answer to these questions

I’ll be doomed to spend my life

    Between pain and paradise

If I were to tell you

All the things I want to say

Would you reach your hand and touch me?

    And chase my loneliness away?

Or would you question my intentions

    Would you believe me insincere?

Would your words come from a distance?

Would you pretend you didn’t hear?

    (Chorus)

If I were to kiss you

Would your lips be moist and sweet?

Would you draw me ever closer?

    Would your passion quickly heat?

Or would your eyes fill up with horror?

Would you break down into tears?

Would you pull away in anger?

    Confirming all my deepest fears

    (Chorus)

If I were to ask you

    Would you answer truly?

Would you meet me half way?

Would you lead me up the pathway?

    Up the pathway to paradise

    To paradise

    Would you meet me?

Would you lead me to paradise?

    More

    More

    Drew James © 2005

When I landed on the shore the soil was soft beneath my feet

The sun was golden warm the air was clear and sugar sweet

Above a wooded hillside flew an eagle through the sky

The beauty of that moment merely whet my appetite

I wanted more, I wanted more, I wanted more

They came with tides of welcome sharing all they had to give

Without words I could tell what they spoke was live let live

They showed me to the fountain where great spirits rise anew

They led me ‘cross the mountain well before they ever knew

I wanted more, I wanted more

More, though my pockets were stuffed

I wanted more, I just couldn’t get enough

I wanted more, I wanted more, I wanted more

I felled the mighty timbers that rose high above the ground

I dug up gold and silver that was begging to be found

The valleys, hills and rivers that I conquered were renamed

The people I encountered were the savage to be tamed

I wanted more, I wanted more, I wanted more

Once each mile between the seas was under my control

History wrote destiny not a country that was stole

The tribes all were rounded into lands I didn’t need

I took the richest earth and left them with the dust and weeds

I wanted more, I wanted more

    (Chorus)

I stepped from the casino after all was finally lost

It was way too late before I realized the cost

When out comes a well dressed man with skin of red

I asked him how this happened, he said “Don’t you understand?

You wanted more, you wanted more”

More, when your pockets were stuffed

You want more, you just couldn’t get enough

You wanted more, you came for more, now you got more

    More than you bargained for

    More than you bargained for

    I'll Tell You Later

    I’ll Tell You Later

    Drew James © 2008

    Dry your eyes

There’s a million dreams about you

    Mesmerized

They can’t spin their tales without you

    Pale moonlight

Slips in through the open window

    Hold on tight

This is where the midnight wind blows

    Through your mind

    Close your ears

There is nothing left to hear

All the simple words that scratch beneath the crowded surface

Have now fulfilled their useful purpose

And turned away like total strangers

So I can’t tell you now I’ll tell you later

Can’t tell you now I’ll tell you later

Can’t tell you now I’ll tell you later

    Truth or lies?

Both are told by saints and sinners

    Who decides?

Can’t tell the losers from the winners

    Paradise

Is sweeter than a thousand crimes

    If I’ve heard it twice

I’ve heard it a thousand times

    So I would mind

    (Chorus)

I know anything that I might say

Would sound like some old tired refrain

It’s gentle meaning used and worn away

    Just like yesterday

    Like goodbye

Can’t tell you now I’ll tell you later (X2)

    (Bridge)

Can’t tell you now I’ll tell you later (X2)

NOTES
This is Drew's first "hands on" recording at Road Tested Tunes Studios. He recorded the basic guitar and vocal tracks at Niagara Falls (Bruce Kaphan's California Studio.) The recording process coupled acoustic microphones on vocals and guitar with a recording from a live sound system. The mixing process integrated these two sonic frameworks to closely produce a live show sound. Keyboard and other instrument accompaniments were added at Road Tested Tunes and the CD was …

    Rise and Shine

    Rise and Shine

    Drew James © 2004

    Rise and shine

The morning sky is getting clearer

    Leave Mr. Worry behind

Shrinking in your rear view mirror

    Tuck that belly in

    Whistle like the wind

Count your blessings on your dirty fingers

    Put on some favorite clothes

Hang a smile beneath your nose

I’ll meet you where the blues never lingers

    Rise and shine

Get that chip off your shoulder

    You’re one of a kind

There’s more to life than just getting older

    Don’t try and pretend

You know how the story ends

You don’t even know where it is written

    C’mon take a chance

Pull that wallet from your pants

And I’ll bet you this day’s worth living

    Rise and shine

The morning sky is getting clearer

    Leave Mr. Worry behind

Shrinking in your rear view mirror

    And don’t be surprised

If happiness comes a little nearer

Like the sun in the sky

    Let it rise and shine

All Over that Girl (with Lynn Asher)

    All Over That Girl

    Drew James © 2005

I touched down in this Mardi Gras town about half past eight

And waited in line for the taxicab ride down to Vieux Carre

The moon was high in the Louisiana night when I hit the street

It was a carnival parade, a drunken masquerade and it felt so sweet

I saw her leaning there against a lamppost

An angel in red boots and black hose

She threw some plastic beads in my direction

I caught ‘em in my teeth just to get her attention

It was all over that girl, it was all over that girl

I pictured in my mind what it would be like to be with her

It was all over that girl, it was all over that girl

Outside of her there was nothing else I wanted in this whole wide world

Together we ran, hand in hand down to Jackson Square

She held me tight on a buggy ride through the humid night air

After a taste at a quiet little place we were flying high

She whispered “Trick or Treat” down on Rampart Street with the devil in her eye

Then she led me through the gates of an old graveyard

To a tomb covered with x’s and strange marks

I read the name out loud “Marie Laveau”

She kissed me and said, “That’s me, you know!”

    (Chorus)

I woke up in the morning all alone

Leaning up against a broken headstone

Now I spend my time wanderin’ ‘round the Quarter

    Vainly searching for her

I can’t get over that girl, I can’t get over that girl

I keep picturin’ in my mind what it would be like to be with her

I can’t get over that girl, I can’t get over that girl

Outside of her there’s nothing else I want in this whole wide world

It was all over that girl, now I can’t get over that girl

It’s Always Summer Somewhere (with Noe Venable)

    It’s Always Summer Somewhere

    Drew James © 2005

Train whistles, piano music, burning leaves

Make me turn and look back up this one way street

    You know I never kept

    All those notes you left

    But underneath the bed

    I found one that said

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

I guess the truth just wasn’t very plain to see

We blurred the line between our love and perjury

I thought I knew you best

So I put it to the test

    And forced you to confess

    In a note that read

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

June romance blew hot just like the Santa Ana wind

July took us to places that we had never been

In August you promised me our love would never end

Then September drained these words out from your pen

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

This winter night has chilled me way down to my bones

This note you left behind drilled way down to my soul

    It was tearing me apart

Until I had a change of heart

And found it held the secret

    To my brand new start

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

Gone now are the reasons that I had left to stay

Gone just like the seasons in a world of constant change

I’m picking up your final note and I’m throwing it away

As I walk out the door I too will say

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

    It’s always summer somewhere

    Inside Out

    nside Out

    Drew James © 2004

    Maybe you’re easy to please

    And maybe not

    Maybe I’m all you need

    And maybe not

    All I know for sure

Is I’ve got no place to hide

You’re driving me crazy but baby I’m enjoying the ride

    Inside Out

I think you know what I’m thinking about

    Outside In

I’ll try to hide it, but I’ll never win

    Till I’m

    Inside out

    Round and round

    Maybe you’re playing it cool

    And maybe not

    Maybe I’m playing the fool

    And maybe not

    All I know for sure

Is I’ll never be the same

Whatever we’re playing, honey I’m enjoying the game

    (Chorus)

We thought we were playing it so discrete

Now I've heard the word has hit the street

    And we’re

    Inside Out

Cause they all know what we’re thinking about

    Outside In

We’ll try to hide it, but we’ll never win

    Till we’re

    Inside out

    Round and round (X3)

    Ahead on the Highway

    Ahead on the Highway

    Drew James © 2004

    Ahead on the Highway (X3)

    Big ass Cadillac, top down

    2 lane drifter

I’m right on her back, hell bound

    Look out sister

    A foot from her bumper

I signal that I’m comin’ around, round, round

    She flips me off

And pushes her pedal to the ground, ground, ground

    Ahead on the Highway (X3)

She goes half a mile, top speed

    Then flashes brake lights

I come up behind, high beams

    She’s in my sights

    I veer to the left

And give my engine a thrust, thrust, thrust

    She cuts me off

And leaves me back in her dust, dust, dust

This situation will never come to no good, good, good

What the hell is she packing under that hood?

    Ahead on the Highway (X3)

I’m back on her tail, again

    This is an outrage

    There’s a passing lane, ahead

    And I’m on a rampage

I fake to the left and she tries to impede

So I pass her on the shoulder in a blaze of speed

I gaze in the mirror to glare my delight

But all I see is that trooper’s red light

    (Slow down - Then stop)

So I pull over by the side of the road and watch as that big caddy goes tooling by doing 55

    Yeah, there she goes …

    Ahead on the highway (X4)

Warm me up in your brilliant sunshine

Burn me alive in your flame

Feed me out of your fertile garden

Wash me clean in your rain

Let me gaze at the silver moonlight

    Shining off of your skin

Let me rise in your starry heaven

    Wrapped in your original sin

    Good morning girl

I want to live in your world

I’ll count my blessings on a long string of pearls

If I can live in your world

Hide me in the dark of your cool, cool forest

Blow me away in your wind

Strand me out in your thirsty desert

Rock me to sleep in your limbs

    (Chorus)

Blue diamonds shine in your skies

Gold glitters bright across your land

And the pearl necklace hung from the nape of your neck

Has no beginning or end, so

    Prison with No Bars

    Prison With No Bars

    Drew James © 2004

    Sweet, sweet baby

    I really love you so

    But sometimes

I just don’t let it show

I could be the man you need

If these bad habits would just let me be

    Wish there was someone

    That I could blame

    But I’m the dealer

    In my losing game

With each new hand I sit and stare

But I’ll be damned if I can make a pair

Oh, I know I’ve kept you waiting

There’s no anticipating my next move

    It’s been a constant struggle

And this hole I dug will leave me sad and blue

But I’m tossing in my cards

‘Cause life’s become a prison with no bars

    My knees went weak

    Beneath a neon sign

    My throat went dry

    And my eyes went blind

In this dive where the pool balls roll

I’ll bury my pride and my self-control

    (Chorus)

I’ve tried and tried so hard

    But it’s all come apart

Because my life became a prison with no bars

    Sweet, sweet baby

    I really love you so

    Sweet, sweet baby

    I really love you so

    Cry, Cry Cry

Baby tell me no more lies

    I can’t believe you’d make a fool of me

I hope you had your thrill

Watchin’ me roll down that hill

But like Jack and Jill you won’t be far behind

Leading me on with your allure

    Stringing me along

‘Till I was hooked for sure

I’m tired of you and all your lies

So I’m gonna set you free

Even those big tears in your eyes

    Look like forgeries

    Ship in a Bottle

    Ship in a Bottle

    Drew James © 2003

Be quiet, the captain is sleeping

The anchor is deep in the mud

The bell in the tower is ringing

It’s morning, but I just can’t wake up

The sailors are all at the harbor

    Awaiting the order to sail

But they’re landlocked at port and at starboard

By a clear glass waterless jail

    My ship in the bottle

    Never goes out to sea

    There's nothing as hollow

As a voyage that never will be

I was born in this small upstairs bedroom

    86 years ago May

This house is my only heirloom

It protects me from night and from day

    Everything I’ve ever needed

Is contained by these windows and walls

But lately I can’t help but feeling

Like a boat with no ports of call

Like a ship in the bottle

I never go out to sea

    There's nothing as hollow

As a voyage that never will be

    I dreamed last night

    That a rising tide

    Washed out the downstairs door

And swept me away from this lonely old place

Off towards some long distant shore

    My ship left it's bottle

And headed out towards the sea

    As this ancient house toppled

    I was finally free

    I was finally free

    I Went to See Maria

    I Went to See Maria

    Drew James © 2004

    I went to see Maria

    Went there on the train

It was too far to drive

And I was too cheap to take a plane

    The porter was a lady

I think her name was Mo

She sat me in the dining car with folks I didn’t know

    Those people talked about themselves

    While I briskly ate

Then Mo came by to tell us

    We’d be arriving late

    I went to see Maria

I went there on the train

    But what I didn’t know

Was that train would go so slow

Forward progress seemed to take forever and a day

I said, “Mo what’s the problem?”

    She pointed with her hand

Outside the window was a winter wonderland

    I went to see Maria

I went there on the train

    But what I didn’t know

Was that train would go so slow

    Because of all the snow

Forward progress seemed to take forever and a day

I stumbled to the sleeping car

And tossed and turned all night

When I got up in the morning the tracks were solid ice

    I went to see Maria

I went there on the train

    But what I didn’t know

Was that train would go so slow

    Because of all the snow

    The rail switches froze

Forward progress seemed to take forever and a day

Then I went to the bathroom

A stench had filled the air

Mo said, “Hey buddy, I wouldn’t go in there?”

    I went to see Maria

I went there on the train

    But what I didn’t know

Was that train would go so slow

    Because of all the snow

    The rail switches froze

    And the toilets overflowed

Forward progress seemed to take forever and a day

    Up and down the mountains

    Those days became a blur

When I got to Maria’s town

    I went to visit her

    I went to see Maria

I went there on the train

    But what I didn’t know

Was that train would go so slow

    Because of all the snow

    The rail switches froze

    And the toilets overflowed

By the time I got to Maria’s house she was married and moved away

    I went to see Maria

    Went there on the train

It was too far to drive

And I was too cheap to take a plane

    Thank You Brother

    Thank You Brother

    Drew James © 2003

I used to take for granted things would last beyond today

And the future when it happened would be oh so far away

Then I’d laugh and light another cigarette

It’s so hard to remember and so easy to forget

I used to look through blinders from a narrow point of view

Sometimes I wouldn’t call you for a week or maybe two

And I ever told you how much you meant

And I never thanked you, it’s so easy to forget.

Thank you for the good times brother

Thank you for the little things that I won’t leave behind

Thank you for those words when I had none to say

Thank you for the sunshine when those clouds got in the way

You know you made me grateful for everything I’ve got

Now I accept life for what it is and for what it’s not

You taught me my best lesson yet

But I never thanked you, it’s so easy to forget.

Thank you for the good times brother

Thank you for the little things that I won’t leave behind

Thank you for those words when I had none to say

Thank you for the sunshine when those clouds got in the way

Now I can look back without regret

And I just want to thank you

    And I never will forget

    Mama Mia

    Drew James © 2006

When I was only six years old

    My brother was a three-a

We were looking through my papa's drawer

To see what we could see-a

Beneath the socks in a jewelry box

Was a big ten cent cigar

We lit it up, had a few puffs

And my mother walked in the door and yelled

    Mama, mama, mama, mama

    Mama, mama mia (X4)

When I was 12 years old

    I had a friend across the street-a

    When his parents weren't home

    We stole his papa's vino

I drank too much and I upchucked

Right in front of the house

My mama came out and began to shout

“My poor little boy is soused” she yelled

    Mama, mama, mama, mama

    Mama, mama mia (X4)

Now I'm grown away from home

    My other stayed behind

But we go to lunch once a month

And have a glass of wine

When the waiter says, “Hey Lady,

What is it I can bring ya?”

I asy, “Hey matey, that's no lady

That's my mama mia” I say

That's my mama, mama, mama, mama

That Old Friday Night Feeling (with Dallis Craft)

    That Old Friday Night Feeling

    Drew James © 2005

My first job was at an Omaha meatpacking plant

They started me out on the swing shift

Just a bit above minimum wage

I remember at the end of my first full week

Smelling the ink on my paycheck

As I drove out the company gate

There’s was something fresh in the air

It ran like the wind through my hair

It lit up the sky like an independence day flare

It was that old Friday night feeling

    Welling up inside of me

A feeling almost too good to believe in

Oh, my outlook gets back on the mend

When my baby’s waiting ‘round the bend

With that old Friday night feeling

It’ll carry us into the weekend

And the best part of my story comes at the end

After near ten years on the same loading dock

I noticed the shipments got fewer

And the layoffs were not far behind

After near six months on the unemployed line

I got a call at home from my foreman

Sayin’, “Drew, come on back to the job”

Last Monday I was back on the dock

Now it’s Friday and I just punched the clock

And there’s an old friend riding with me tonight in my truck

    It’s that … (Chorus)

Now I’m coming around the bend

Down the block there’s a small piece of land

And there with my baby is where my story will end

    With that …(Chorus)

    Hands Up!

    Hands Up

    Drew James © 2007

    All night train

I’ll see it in the morning light

    All night train

I’ll see it in the morning light

    Hiding high above the blind

In a Smith & Wesson dream

When the whistle blows and the engine slows

I’ll jump through a cloud of steam

It ain’t far from car to car

I can make it in one leap

    Crawling ‘round without a sound

To where the rich men sleep

    Hands up

    Hands down

    Hand it over

    Arms bound

    (Repeat chorus)

I hear the wheels and smell the steel

Rise through the crack of dawn

Wait and wait till I hear the brake

Then through the air I come

    At 5 o’clock I pick the lock

    Into first class I creep

But the plot’s undone when I see a gun

    Pointing back at me

    (Repeat refrain)

Out of luck like a sitting duck

Cause in the train car that I chose

Were cops escorting wards of the court

    In their orange prison clothes

They chained me up with two handcuffs

And now I’m doing my time

The bars of a cell sound like railroad bells

When you bang your head and cry

    (Repeat chorus)

    (Repeat refrain) (X2)

    You Can Cry to Me

    You Can Cry to Me

    Drew James © 2006

When blue skies look cloudy from your eyes

And the wind from the mountain smells of rain

When your shadow in the sand seems your only friend

And tonight even that one won’t remain

When the spring leaves start falling from your trees

And the blossoms’ summer colors turn to brown

When your birds refuse to sing and it seems you’ve lost your wings

And you feel like you’re sinking into the ground

When sad and lonely’s all you see

You know you can cry to me

When your sweet dreams won’t get out of their beds

And your secrets all run naked far and wide

When the answers that you seek grow more distant with each blink

And you couldn’t chase them faster if you tried

When your wise men are all made out as fools

And the words you live by all go up in smoke

When you realize though you do not regret things that you do

You still regret the things that you don’t

When a gentle shoulder’s what you need

You know you can cry to me

And when your stars regain their wishes once again

And your back is finally to the wind

When all your tears are finally through

Can I come and cry to you?

Can I come and cry to you?

    Thicker Than Blood

    Thicker Than Blood

    Drew James © 2006

I stand wounded at the edge of night

Cryin’ to the moon can’t you make it right

As the mad rain falls down and the whiskey wind it blows

If the devil calls out my name

I got nowhere to lay the blame

Sixty years of trouble is all I have to show

And my blues flow down like a river

Blues flow down like a river

Blues flow down like a river

    Thicker than blood

A burdened mind makes it hard to stand

I live in the broken promised land

I’m never gonna make it up to the top of the hill

Can’t repent cause it’s too late

My last horse has left the gate

And it’s pulled up lame at the door of the bonemeal mill

    (Chorus)

I’ve got one more thing to say

    Before I slowly drift away

    There may be things

That you think you would never do

That’s how I used to feel

Till my fate turned like a wheel

If it can happen to me it can happen to you

And your blues will flow like a river

Blues will flow like a river

Blues will flow like a river

    Thicker than blood

    (Repeat last chorus)

    So Long

    So Long

    Drew James © 2005

    When it came time

    To make up my mind

    The choice was clear

I can’t make it from here

    Chance must be thrown

    Into the unknown

    I was ready to leave

    When your words I received

    As I go away

    You say so long

    While I’m gone

    One hope will remain

    For the day you’ll say

    It’s been so long

    Welcome home

    Then I’ll stay

    So looong

    Looong

    So long, So long

    The songbird’s wing

    Has no freedom to bring

    Till he can be shed

    That cage in his head

    Then he can fly

And there’s no roof on the sky

It’s just him and his dream

    Nothin’ else in between

    You're So Good for Me

    You’re So Good for Me

    Drew James © 2007

    The signs along Columbus Avenue

Will light up my way tonight

I can’t stop and talk to my friend down the block

I’ll just shout out that I’m doing fine

When I reach the doorway in front of your place

I’ll count my way up the stairs

I’ll knock as my heart pounds the seconds I wait

    Until you’re standing there

    You’re so good for me

    You are my style

    Since we met

    I’ve been wearing this smile

    I have it made

    When you’re by my side

    You’re so good for me

    You’re so good for me

The moon will paint the sidewalk we take

From your house to Pier 39

I’ve reserved a booth for me and you

    We’ll order your favorite wine

As we watch the fishing boats float on the bay

I’ll slip my arm round your waist

Then I’ll pull you tight when the time seems right

And I know just what I’ll say

    (Chorus)

When that bottle of wine’s almost empty

I’ll pour the last glass for you

Then I’ll place in your hand this engagement band

How I hope that you will say too

    (ChorusX2)

    Way Beyond the Maze

    Beyond the Maze

    Drew James © 2006

I’ll meet you on the straight line way beyond the maze

Breathing in the fresh air high above the haze

When we hear the answers will we be amazed

There along the straight line way beyond the maze

Abraham, Isaac and the holy ghost

Tied up satan to a hitchin’ post

Left him in the hot sun scratchin’ at the dust

But he broke loose now he’s comin’ after us

    (Chorus)

Stella heard the thunder blowing in the breeze

Turned her eyes to heaven and she fell upon her knees

The rain came down in a mighty flood

And buried her world in a sea of mud

    (Chorus)

Sodom ruled his land with the pistol and the sword

Grew his army to a mighty hoard

But his generals never heard his battle cries

Cause he was brought down by a pack of lies

    (Chorus

Donald built a prison on an island in the sea

Well beyond the borders of common decency

He swore to the people that his methods were humane

Then half the population was marched away in chains

    (Chorus

Daniel saw a vision at the blind crossroads

The apparition said there’s a message to be told

Daniel wept as the spirit moaned

Be careful of those devils wearing Jesus’ clothes

    (ChorusX2)

    The World is Perfect

    The World is Perfect

    Drew James © 2007

We sit in the Café Jalesco

    Where each conversation’s an echo

Of when the times were carefree

And our dreams were so real

Before the Hydes all escaped from our Jekylls

I walk to the jukebox on cue

The same way that I always do

    I’ve worn out the keys

    Playing that tune on A3

The world is perfect except for you

Sometimes you live and you don’t learn

You see all the signs and still don’t turn

Your shadow just gets longer when the sun’s going down

Until your chances with the nice girls are gone

We share the same table for three

Little Jimmy, Big Joe and me

    Where once told stories

    Of conquest and glory

Until they became too hard to believe

    Now each sentence begins

“If I had it to do over again…”

You can fill in the rest

    Because no second guess

Will ever change anything in the end

    (Chorus)

As that song plays over and over

I wonder how I ever let her go

Now each kiss I’m unable to give her

Leaves another open wound on my soul

The world is perfect except for you

The world is perfect except for you

Almost perfect can feel all wrong

When your chances with the nice girls are gone

The world is perfect except for you

The world is perfect except for you

I just kept on playing that same old song

Until my chances with the nice girls were gone

    Every Daydream

    Every Daydream

    Drew James © 2006

    Someday I may finally write

    My perfect love song

The one that melts the stubborn hearts

    As I sing

But every angle that I’ve tried

    Just seems to go wrong

    Maybe milk and honey lines

    Just ain’t my thing

    Some feelings can’t be described

Like the one you give off with your eyes

    The one you never vocalize

    But somehow lets me know

I am number two to none

    Underneath your golden sun

Honey you know that’s the one

That can bring every daydream back home

The poets’ words can never touch

    Your skin in moonlight

The painters brush can never stroke

The way your lips can please

The beauty of their works of art

    Cannot be denied

But to come close to the real thing

    Takes a masterpiece

    (chorus)

    I can swear

    When you're near

    What I hear

    Is my perfect love song

    (chorus)

I’ll keep bringing all my daydreams back home (X2)

    Stumbled on the Truth

    Stumbled on the Truth

    Drew James © 2006

    We can see

    But it’s way too bright

We’ve turned a blind eye so long we’re just not used to this light

    We can speak

But words can’t make it right

They all fall in and out of our deaf ears here tonight

We danced around and around each lame excuse

    Until we stumbled

    We stumbled on the truth

    I can reason

    But I can’t comprehend

Why this wound we suffered is not the kind that time can mend

    I can wish

    But I just can’t pretend

The last lines of our story will somehow have a rainbow end

    (Chorus)

The clock sets foot on midnight at our foolish masquerade

The band strikes up the final tune they have left to play

If we keep our masks in place for just a little while more

I’ll take your hand for one last dance out there on the floor

“Once more for the old times” can be our lame excuse

    It’ll be just like before

Before we stumbled on the truth

    Love on the Outside

    Love on the Outside

    Drew James © 2006

    I waited but I couldn’t take it

It felt like someone else was walking around in my shoes

On your island my demons were silent

But now you’re gone and I’ve nothing else to lose

You'll pass always through my heart’s hallways

My portrait of you still hangs upon my wall

Its colors fading and time’s erasing

    The hope that someday soon

Like a bolt out of the blue

Mine’s the next number that you’ll call

I continued to place my faith in you

When your promises were only made out of straw

    Expectations without foundations

Leave you hanging even after you fall

    (Chorus)

You kept your feelings in when love got on the outside

The game was lose or win and I guess you felt that was alright

    (Chorus)

Mine’s the next number that you’ll call

    Colors fading

    Time’s erasing

    Is it goodbye

When love is on the outside

    Love is on the outside

    Goodnight Cowboy

    Goodnight Cowboy

    Drew James © 2007

He made his bed by the roadside

Where he dreamed his American dreams

His boots once of shiny black leather

Were now coming apart at the seams

The coyote howls in the distance

    Were closer than ever before

    Completely surrounding his position

    No place seemed safe anymore

    Goodnight cowboy, goodnight

Ride like the wind reach high like the eagle

Above the hills and the treetops to the brown dusty plains

Your saddlebags empty of gold and of silver

As the autumn sun bows to the oncoming rain

You must search for the hopes of tomorrow

Wrapped in a circle of darkness

    Feeling so tired and alone

The promise of a brave hero’s welcome

Was the lone star above him that shone

His rifle was loaded with questions

His enemy’s straw men in rags

His orders read “It’s all or nothing”

His defense worn thin as his flag

    (Chorus)

He stared at the moon and he wondered

Which way he came down this road

His past was unclear as his future

Clouded by the lies he was told

For all his commanders and generals

Thought truth paved the road to defeat

So when war began claiming its victims

Truth was the first one to bleed

They claimed he was felled by the enemy

And they buried the evidence well

But you can’t keep truth long a secret

    Cause time will eventually tell

    (Chorus)

    I'm on Your Side

    I’m on Your Side

    Drew James © 2007

You can stop me if you’ve heard this one

I might have sung it here once before

Our time together’s grown so short and precious

And I sure don’t mean to be a bore

But I couldn’t let you slip away

Without taking the time to say

    A parting word or two

Something you can take away with you

You know that I’m on your side

I hope our auld ang seins won’t just get left behind

    There’s so much to live

And I have so much more to give

I’m on your side, I’m on your side

Soon we’ll go our separate ways

    Different lives in different places

And brand new thoughts will fill your head

And take the place of these words I said

But somewhere deep inside your heart

These words might cling to just a little part

And on some quiet night or afternoon

You’ll recall an old familiar tune

    I’m on your side

I hope our auld ang seins won’t just get left behind

    There’s so much to live

And I have so much more to give

I’m on your side, I’m on your side

I’m on your side, I’m on your side

    Though not accused

He’s sentenced to the preservation blues

Citizens spot him from the passenger train

    Shakin’ in their shoes

Oh lord won’t you save them

Their lives are on the line

    Their battles are ragin’

And time ain’t on their side

Oh lord, they’re crying out to you

Little by little, it is takin’ its toll

    Born to lose

    The One

I’d Like to be the One

    Drew James © 2001

I’d like to be the one

To get your late night call

    To whisper on my pillow

With my feet up on the wall

    To bid you pleasant dreams

    When our conversation’s done

I’d like to be the one

I’d like to be the one

    To wander ‘cross your mind

    As you lie awake

    Way past sleepin’ time

To be the thought you hold

    As moonlight meets the sun

I’d like to be the one

The one who hears his name

    Always next to yours

The one who tells you things

    He’s never told before

The one who’s love you make

The one who’s spell you break

I’d like to be the one

I’d like to be the one

    To look into your eyes

    As you say, “Hey, sweetheart

Where’ve you been all my life?”

    To make another day

    A celebration

I’d like to be the one

I'll Never Make Friends With You Again

I’ll Never Make Friends With You Again

    Drew James © 2003

You lit that smile on your blue-eyed face

I couldn’t tell if it was meant for me

You looked just a bit out of place

From the start you were hard to believe

How could I have been so blind

    When will I ever learn

Out of sight out of mind

I was alone when the weather turned

I’ve been waiting for you all night long

Taking cover by this pay telephone

I swear to the wind and I swear to the rain

And I’ll never make friends with you again

I saw you at the coffee shop

You pretended not to see me

Then you tried not to stop

But I reached out and tugged your sleeve

I wouldn’t let you get away

So now I’m paying the price

It seems this bed I’ve made

Is smack in the middle of a fool’s paradise

    (Chorus)

I searched from the bridge through the park

I searched from the light until dark

Now I can’t shake this fear in my head

That I’ll never make friends with you again

How could I have been so blind

    When will I ever learn

Out of sight out of mind

    Across The U.S.A.

    Across the USA

    Drew James © 2001

You know I feel so different this morning

    There’s something special today

My mind’s clear like never before

My thoughts are so far away

    Unemployment and sunshine

    Go together so well

I’m in the mood for a road trip

I need some stories to tell

    (Chorus)

With a few cans of Spam and a sleeping bag

    I’ll be on my way

    Across the USA

    Across the USA

I’ve never been way out in Las Vegas

I ain’t been down to New Orleans

I’ve lived my whole life here in Toledo

Its time I lived out my dreams

    Can’t tell Esther I’m going

    She just won’t understand

I left the car by the creekside

    I’ve got it carefully planned

With my new moustache and some wraparound shades

    I will make my way

    Across the USA

    (Bridge)

A few misleading clues on the table

A little hair of the dog

A trace of blood in the stable

    I Know What Love Is

    I Know What Love Is

    Drew James © 2003

When you told me you love me

    You took me by surprise

    Now I doubt the intentions

That lie behind your innocent eyes

    There once was another

    Who used those same words

Then I watched it all shatter

She left me there with nothin’ but hurt

I thought when I met you

    All that had changed

    But now I’ve discovered

    It’s all just the same

    I know what love is

It’s a lock with no key

    A promise that’s broken

A lie you try to believe

    I know what love is

It’s the verse of a poem

    That once it’s recited

    Leaves you sad and alone

    I know what love is

    I know what love is

When you told me you love me

Who’d you think you could fool

    Cause words ain’t just words

When someone believes that they might be true

    But I ain’t that someone

    I’ve been through this before

If I told you I love you

You’d laugh and walk out that door

    PC

    Chorus

    Rain Took The Rhubarb

    Rain Took The Rhubarb

    Drew James © 2001

I thought the worst was over

Now the ache’s back in my heart

There’s no way to replay this game

We can’t go back to start

All the words that you can say

    Have all been said before

They’re worn out like the dreams that lay

    Scattered on our floor

Now the rain took the rhubarb Elmo

A storm washed away all the years

The rain took the rhubarb Elmo

Just as spring came smiling down

    A tempest fell like tears

And all our hopes for harvest disappeared

A cold wind blew all winter

And chilled us to the bone

Our credit at the general store

    Ran out months ago

All we had at Christmas time

    Was salty pork and beans

On New Years we sang Auld Lang Syne

    Then we mortgaged everything

    Chorus

You said this time would be different

You said that things had changed

You promised me and I believed

It all wouldn’t be in vain

Then the rain took the rhubarb Elmo

A storm washed away all the years

The rain took the rhubarb Elmo

Just as spring came smiling down

    A tempest fell like tears

And all our hopes for harvest disappeared

    Read About The Mob

Read About the Mob © 1999 by Drew James

When I was a young boy

    Growing up on the streets

    In the Italian neighborhood

    I’d watch the old men

    Down on the corner

And knew they were up to no good

    They all had young girls

    And fresh tailored suits

And drove in big black cars

    They walked like kings

Through the alleys and the streets

Drank on the arm in all the bars

    Chorus:

I love to read about the mob

    And catch their TV shows

I wear a dark suit and a Borsolino hat

And vacation on the Jersey shore

    Sammy “the bull” Gravano

    Lucky Luciano

    Paul Castellano

    Frankie Abbatemarco

    Sal Maranzano

Author of the “No Hands Rule”

    Whether puttin’ up a book

Or riding a cold meat hook

The big Dons and the Godfathers rule

They’ll take you up the Bridge of Sighs

And have you stare into the mad dogs eyes

Till you take the wrap and play the fool

    Chorus

    Cosa Nostra face due Valacchi

    Mafioso capo Carlo Gambino

Midnight Rose and rosso tavolo vino

    Don’t get cozy Dr. Lambardozzi

Steel bullets and a rubber hosie

The FBI is getting’ real nosey

    Rock 'n Roll Tears

    Rock n’ Roll Tears

    © Drew James 2002

When my fingers, touch the silver strings

I recall the joy it used to bring

Before the tune changed to fortune & fame

From this stage, high above the ground

Can’t find a friend, out in the crowd

I’m out of reach and so far out of touch

So who will catch me if I slip & fall from way up here

Alone with my rock n’ roll tears

Pretty sounds, led to starry eyes

    Precious rings, fans who idolize

How it came to be I’ll never explain

I stood by and watched it grow

Seemed all I touched turned into gold

Till the only pretty sounds were made by the sales

But who will catch me if I slip & fall from way up here

Alone with my rock n’ roll tears

Now everyone I try to hold

    Freezes just like Midas gold

    And all the starry eyes

    Are turning clear

Except for my rock n’ roll tears

So who will catch me if I slip & fall from way up here

And dry these rock n’ roll tears

    Sworn On A Bible

    Sworn on a Bible

    Drew James © 2001

She takes the left turn off the hot road

Ands drives on through the barbwire maze

Four guards to pass with an innocent smile

She lives for these visiting days

She’s a new page in his story

A series that’s yet to be bound

Each chapter’s come to a similar end

Hidden so it cannot be found

And she swears her love on his bible

She'll love him till the moon’s lost its glow

Till all the birds have run out of songs

Till darkness is all that she knows

    Plexiglas laced with cold steel

Joins in their welcome of hands

Religious words start to pour from his lips

He says only god can judge man

He cries that his past is remorseful

And he carries this burden in his heart

And true prison walls are that memory’s long

Coupled with life that’s so short

    Chorus

The clock watchman signals one minute

As the visitor’s love is professed

She’ll return as his character witness

    Parole hearing’s week after next

Then she’ll swear for him on a bible

And he’ll love her till the moon’s lost its glow

Till all the birds have run out of songs

Till darkness is all that she knows

Till darkness is all that she knows

    Now & Then

    Now and Then

    Drew James © 2002

I’ll try to do my best for you

When I’m gone and when I’m next to you

Short or long, I’ll treasure all the time we spend

I won’t ask if it’s now or never

I won’t ask will it last forever

I’ll just ask you to love me when you can

New days color in your eyes

Makes me lose my sense of time

When you say you love me now and then

I won’t ask what you see in me

I won’t ask was it meant to be

I’ll just ask you to love me when you can

Will you love me now when it seems so easy

Will you love me now when there’s nothing much to lose

Now, as the music plays so sweetly

Now, is what I’ll ask of you

Truth won’t shine on all our wishes

    Maybe rags and never riches

If things go wrong will you try to understand

I won’t ask you to wear a halo

I won’t ask you to chase a rainbow

I’ll just ask you to love me when you can

Will you love me then if it ain’t so easy

Will you love me then if its everything to lose

Then, when the violins are weeping

Then, is what I’ll ask of you

I’ll just ask you to love me when you can

I’ll just ask you to love me now and then

    Hold On Me

    Hold on Me

    Drew James © 2003

Driving South on Highway 9 my curiosity’s about to win

My headlights hit the freeway sign and I exit

    To the old hometown again

    Morning stars fade to blue

Shadows become the places I once knew back then

The first time I left this town I swore that it was for good

Those words echo through my mind as I drive

    Through our old neighborhood

Just like a the prodigal son

As words I once said all come undone

But it ain’t words that I regret

    It’s your memory that I can’t forget

    Your eyes full of wonder

    Glistening in the night

    Your lightning and your thunder

    And all I left behind

Forever was the promise I could never keep

But forever you keep this hold on me

I trace a now familiar route that winds around the landmarks of our past

My mind becomes the stage where all the good times

    And bad times get rehashed

I’m a prisoner of what could have been

Of chances I’ll never have again

So I wander ‘cross this sad old town

Lookin’ for something that can’t be found

    (Chorus)

Though you live here no longer

This urge to return keeps getting stronger

I’m still tryin’ to come back home again

    To (Chorus)X2

You keep this hold on me (X3)

Would You Like To Go Dancing?

Would You Like To Go Dancin’?

    Drew James © 2000

Fifth of six sisters Elvera Marie

Worked at the five and dime five days a week selling perfume

That lined her counter so neat

Her sweetheart was Eddie a truck drivin’ man

An ex-Navy boxer, a tough guy, a joker

But his love for her was as gentle as the rain

He’d tell her he’d be by the store about eight

To give her a ride home, but he’d always be late

But then he’d come in, with a whistle and grin

And lean ‘cross the counter and tickle her chin and say

(Chorus) Would you like to go dancin’ tonight?

The moon’s in the street and the stars are so bright

I’ll shave and find something snappy to wear

While you freshen your lipstick and brush out your hair

If you’d like to go dancin’ tonight

Wedding bells rang on a spring afternoon

Third floor apartment, fireplace, two bedrooms

That Vera quit her five and dime job to keep

As Eddie delivered fresh bakery goods

And cussed at the traffic with a Lucky Strike hung from his lip

His tan tattooed arm in the wind

And every evening as the sun would grow dim

She’d sit by the window waiting for him

The phone call from Eddie, “honey, I might be late”

A rough day, a flat tire, a closed interstate,

But when he’d come in, he’d whistle and grin

And hug and kiss her and tickle her chin and say …

    Chorus

Over 25 years their love affair grew

Then sickness took Eddie, he just couldn’t pull through

So Vera went back to the five and dime store

Selling their perfume, just like before

But now and again, as night settles in

She’ll lean on the counter, with her hands on her chin and say…

I’d love to go dancin’ tonight

The moon’s in the street and the stars are so bright

I’ll bet I’ve got something pretty to wear

I could freshen my lipstick and brush out my hair

If I could go dancin’ tonight (X2)

    All Your Riches

All Your Riches © 1999 by Drew James

    All Rights Reserved

    Verse 1:

Willie tips his hat to the ladies in the laundromat

As the sun shines off the top of his head

He’s just passing through 34th Avenue

With its shop windows lined end to end

He sees business boy suits and black Spanish boots

And gadgets on the layaway plan

But nothin’ that competes with a day at the beach

And a wine speckled nap in the sand

    Chorus:

All your riches ain’t made of gold

And them greenbacks ‘ll make you grow cold

All that treasure you store only makes you want more

Ain’t no pockets on the pants of your soul

All your riches ain’t made of gold

    Verse 2:

Willie’s extended holiday began on one sunny day

And has lasted way past 20 years

Every morning’s like new though there’s nothin’ to do

But to dangle his feet off the pier

And the cop on the beat will tap Willie’s feet

To roust him up just before dawn

But then pass right on by without battin’ an eye

As Willie bums change with this song

    Repeat Chorus

    Bridge:

When his holiday’s done and his place in the sun

Is taken as time marches on

We’ll all forget how much change filled his hat

But we’ll always remember his song

    Repeat Chorus

Ain’t no pockets on the pants of your soul

All your riches ain’t made of gold
